    Description

This fine historic house, set in a fascinating designed landscape, is something of a time-capsule.

Newhailes is a 17th-century villa, later significantly added to by the Dalrymple family, who were influential figures of the Scottish Enlightenment.

It is an amazing survival story of early 18th century decorative interiors and collections, as the National Trust for Scotland has conserved and presented what history has left and visitors will see a mellow, rather than immaculately restored, house. It contains a fine collection of paintings and furniture, and much of the original decorative scheme, including Chinese hand-pained wallpaper.

The house is set in an important 18th century designed landscape with woodland walks, open parkland, remains of water-gardens and built features including a shell grotto and classical summerhouse.

(to date their only 5 star VisitScotland attraction)
