This is a song about the Scottish Covenanters who fought for religious freedom from 1638. When the Covenant was signed by 400 Presbyterian ministers in Greyfriars Kirkyard Edinburgh. They fought a war against religious persecution from both Catholic Monarchs and the Anglican Church who wanted to impose Bishops on the kirk,It was known as the Killing Times.Only when King william had come to the throne in 1690 did the kirk regain it's religious freedom.
