Description

In Scotland two RAF bases were earmarked for closure as a result of SDSR and the Scots were told the Army would be arriving in big numbers from Germany.

Today's announcement, which also included news that 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment, currently based at Palace Barracks, Belfast, will move to Chester in 2014 to be replaced by 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, currently based in Edinburgh, has painted a somewhat different picture.

RAF Leuchars in Scotland has been saved. The Scots Dragoon Guards and a REME Battalion will arrive there from Germany in 2015.

Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh has also been saved, 3 RIFLES will move there in 2014. And HQ 51st Brigade will move to Redforth Barracks next year.

The Royal Marines base at Arbroath is also being saved.

But some under-used bases are closing. Craigiehall in Edinburgh is being sold off, as is part of Forthside and part of Redforth Barracks. And plans for an HQ at Kirknewton have been scrapped.

Maj Gen Nick Eeles, the General Officer Commanding Scotland, gave his reaction to the shake-up and its impact on soldiers in Scotland.
